Mayer Brown's Brussels office honored by Belgian Legal Awards as "Trade Team of the Year"
19 March 2008
The Brussels office of Mayer Brown LLP, a leading international law firm, has been named "Trade Team of the Year" by the Belgian Legal Awards, which honor excellence, continuity and innovation in the legal sphere. Nominees are selected according to an objective written survey carried out in cooperation with the Official Partners of the Legal Awards and representatives from the business community.
"This recognition is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of all the lawyers in our Global Trade Group," said James D. Holzhauer, Mayer Brown Chairman. "The addition of top-tier talent in the Brussels office, and the firm's recent merger with JSM, the leading law firm in Asia, will enable us to continue to grow our international trade capabilities and expand the strategic counsel we can provide our clients on trade and customs issues worldwide."
Mayer Brown began building its international trade presence in Brussels just three years ago, with the addition in spring 2005 of Dr. Günter Burghardt and Paulette Vander Schueren and their team from Coudert Brothers. Soon thereafter, Jean-Philippe Montfort, Europe's leading legal practitioner on EU chemical control (REACH) joined the firm, followed later that year by WTO and EU trade partner Edward Borovikov and his team from Hammonds.
The group has been recognized in recent years for their exceptional work both in the Brussels and Washington, D.C. offices. Chambers Global noted that Mayer Brown's Global Trade Group "has been making a real push in the international trade arena," and said "with its established and developing presence in Washington, D.C., the firm is now ideally placed in the trade world's two key jurisdictions." Also, Borovikov and Vander Schueren, along with Washington, D.C. partners Mickey Kantor, Peter Scher and Duane Layton, were recently recognized by International Who's Who of Trade & Customs Lawyers 2008.
Mayer Brown's Global Trade practice supports clients seeking to gain and maintain an advantage in the global marketplace. Practice members address a range of trade and governmental issues through strategic advice, litigation, counsel, advocacy, and representation in administrative proceedings. The team is made up of some of the most experienced senior trade professionals and lawyers from the U.S. and the European Union, several of whom have obtained international recognition for their representation of clients in trade defense and policy, customs and market access issues. The group includes a former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative, a former EU Ambassador to the United States, and former senior U.S. trade negotiators and senior trade officials. The group's members have extensive contacts with senior government officials and vast experience negotiating market opening agreements in major markets, administering trade laws and litigating trade disputes.
