Mayer Brown strengthens London office Financial Services Regulation & Enforcement group with partner hire
3 May 2011
Leading global law firm Mayer Brown announced the hire of Mark Compton to the London office to strengthen the Financial Services Regulation & Enforcement (FSRE) group. Mark joins from BP where he was the senior financial services regulatory lawyer.
Mark has worked for BP since 2004 and advised on all UK and EU financial services regulation and in particular FSA rules on market abuse, and enforcement as well as Anti-Money Laundering legislation, economic sanctions and bribery, corruption and ethics – including US FCPA and UK Bribery Act. Prior to BP Mark spent six years at the FSA (he joined the UK Listing Authority (UKLA) at the London Stock Exchange (LSE) before it transferred to the FSA), where he worked on enforcement issues such as market abuse. He trained with Slaughter and May and qualified into their Litigation Department.
Mark's appointment follows the long term secondment to the London office in 2010 of Mayer Brown FSRE partner Marc Cohen to lead the London office FSRE team. Marc has moved to the London office from the Washington DC office to assist the firm's global financial services firms clients with their challenging cross-border strategic, regulatory, enforcement and litigation issues. Mark will also work closely with FSRE partner Angela Hayes, a leading FSA investigations expert and also a former adviser to the FSA.
Sean Connolly, senior partner at Mayer Brown in London, said: "Mark’s appointment supports our commitment to continuing to invest in this important and topical area. There is a growing need in the current market place for both Mark and Marc's skills in London and Europe, and we look forward to our client’s receiving the benefits of that."
Marc Cohen, lead FSRE partner at Mayer Brown in London, said: "We are extremely pleased to have Mark Compton join our London FSRE team at this critical time. He brings to the table years of top-level in-house, financial supervisory and law firm experience and combines non-contentious and contentious skill sets in key areas of interest to our clients."
Mark Compton said: “I am very excited by my move to Mayer Brown. Financial services regulation is increasingly global in its response and effect; with particularly solid transatlantic cooperation between regulators. The chance to work for a firm with such a strong international presence and client base and to help build an offering that can provide global solutions is a fantastic opportunity for me."
