CHICAGO AND SÃO PAULO, 21 December, 2009 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that it has formed an association with Tauil & Chequer (T&C), a leading law firm in Brazil. The firms will cooperate to provide clients with a unique combination of local strength and global reach.
T&C will practice under the name “Tauil & Chequer in association with Mayer Brown,” and Mayer Brown’s São Paulo office will continue to practice under its existing name. Through T&C, Mayer Brown will offer its global clients legal counsel on Brazilian domestic matters governed by Brazilian law and will increase its resources for advising clients with respect to investments in Africa, notably Angola, where many of T&C’s clients have been active. T&C’s clients will gain access to Mayer Brown’s global platform, including the firm’s existing São Paulo office that advises clients on matters governed by New York and English law and US securities law.
“This agreement marks an important milestone in the execution of Mayer Brown’s global strategy to leverage the strengths of our local offices and our global platform,” said Mayer Brown Chairman Bert Krueger. “Combining the resources of our São Paulo office and T&C will deliver important benefits to our current and future clients and create new growth opportunities for both firms.”
Founded in 2001, T&C has grown rapidly and today has approximately 90 lawyers in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The firm is noted for its representation of companies in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
In commenting on the association, T&C founding partner Alexandre Chequer said, “Many of our clients continue to expand their operations overseas. This association will enable us to serve the full range of their legal needs through Mayer Brown’s practice area depth and strong presence in the key business centers of the world. At the same time, we welcome the opportunity to serve Mayer Brown clients who need Brazilian law capability.”
Stephen Hood, partner in charge of Mayer Brown’s São Paulo office, said, “Continued growth in the energy and infrastructure sectors is a top strategic priority for Mayer Brown, and T&C’s strength in this market will contribute greatly to our realization of that goal. In addition, both firms share a commitment to excellence in legal work and client service that will help ensure the success of our association.”
Mr. Krueger added, “Mayer Brown has actively represented clients in Brazil and Latin American for nearly two decades, particularly in the banking and finance arena, through the 40-plus members of our Latin America practice. The emergence of Brazil as a major player on the global economic stage led us to establish our office in São Paulo two years ago, which has grown rapidly by serving both Brazilian clients and the firm’s global clients with interests in that country. This new association with T&C is a logical next step in further strengthening our global platform.”
