Mayer Brown Partner Phil Recht appointed Partner in Charge of the firm's Los Angeles office

29 April 2009

29 April 2009 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today the appointment of Philip R. Recht as Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s Los Angeles office. He succeeds James E. Tancula, who returned to the firm’s Chicago office to resume his litigation practice full-time.

“Phil brings to his new role proven leadership and management skills and an outstanding reputation and track record as a lawyer in both the public and private sectors,” said Mayer Brown Chairman James D. Holzhauer. “These attributes, along with his extensive involvement in civic affairs in the city and state, make him an ideal choice to head our Los Angeles office.

Mr. Recht joined Mayer Brown in 1999, after serving as Chief Counsel and Deputy Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. He is the head of the firm’s California Government & Global Trade group and has extensive experience in government regulatory matters, with particular expertise in transportation, tribal gaming, health care, land use, trade association and election law matters. He also is a member of the office’s recently established Executive Committee.

“I’m honored to be given the opportunity to lead the outstanding attorneys in Mayer Brown’s Los Angeles office,” Mr. Recht said. “I look forward to working with all those lawyers, including the other Executive Committee members, as we drive the continued growth of the office and build to critical mass in all of our key practice areas,” said Mr. Recht.

In addition to his work at Mayer Brown, Mr. Recht has been an active member of the Los Angeles business community for more than 20 years. Recently, he was elected to serve as Chair of the Central City Association of Los Angeles (CCA), the city’s premier business advocacy organization. He also serves on numerous other boards including the Los Angeles Business Council, Public Counsel and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. He also previously served as Vice President of the City of Los Angeles Board of Transportation Commissioners, President of the Century City Bar Association, and President of the California Political Attorneys Association.
