Mayer Brown JSM boosts its Global Trade practice in Asia with new hires

7 July 2008
Mayer Brown JSM, a leading global law firm, today announced that Matthew McConkey will join the firm and lead the Global Trade Group in Asia. Joining the firm with him is Yao Aifeng.

"Our clients' needs for legal services in the trade arena are increasingly global in scope," said Elaine Lo, Asia Chair and Senior Partner of Mayer Brown JSM. "Matthew's addition to our team of international trade lawyers further enhances one of our firm's strongest capabilities."

Most recently, Mr. McConkey was a partner at a large global law firm in Beijing where he advised on a wide-range of international trade matters, with a focus on trade litigation (e.g.antidumping) and other US and Chinese market-access issues. He frequently represents Chinese and Vietnamese companies in antidumping and other "import relief" actions in the United States and Europe. Mr. McConkey and his group also provide technical and strategic advice to Western companies seeking access to the Chinese market. Early in his career, he was an attorney with the Office of the Chief Counsel of the US Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. Mr. McConkey also served in an Of Counsel capacity at the former Coudert Brothers law firm in both its Washington and Beijing offices.

"Matthew's experience in trade and customs matters will greatly enhance the assistance we can provide to our clients on both inbound and outbound trade issues in China and Asia," said Duane Layton, firm-wide practice leader of Mayer Brown's Global Trade Group. "Matthew also will provide depth and support to our current international trade team in Vietnam and Thailand. With the addition of Matthew and Aifeng in China, the footprint of Mayer Brown's Global Trade Group is truly global," he said.

"Mayer Brown's global platform and strong presence both in Washington, DC and Brussels was a very important selling point for me," said Mr. McConkey. "I look forward to working with this group of leading trade lawyers to expand the capabilities and services the firm can offer its clients both in Asia and worldwide."

Mr. McConkey graduated from the University of Michigan and went on to receive his J.D., magna cum laude, from American University, Washington School of Law. Mr. Yao specializes in China inbound and outbound trade matters. He is a certified public accountant and advises on legal/accounting trade matters. Mr. Yao received his degree from the Central University of Economics and Finance.
