Mayer Brown expands Insurance Industry Group with addition of new partner David Alberts

17 May 2010

17 May 2010 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that David Alberts joined its New York office as a partner in the Corporate & Securities practice and the Insurance Industry Group.  His  practice focuses on M&A, corporate finance, complex regulatory and structured finance in the insurance and reinsurance industries.

Mr. Alberts comes from Hogan Lovells and is the fifth lateral partner – including three corporate partners and one finance partner – to join Mayer Brown’s New York office this year.

The hiring of Mr. Alberts reinforces Mayer Brown’s strategic decision to focus on the insurance and reinsurance industry and expand the firm’s practice in the insurance M&A, corporate finance and insurance-capital markets convergence space.  The Insurance Industry Group has more than 100 attorneys worldwide with specialized knowledge and experience in both transactional and dispute resolution matters across all disciplines that intersect with the insurance and reinsurance industry.

“Dave is a world-class practitioner in the insurance industry who is well-known and highly regarded among insurers, reinsurers, investment banks and investors,” said Kenneth R. Pierce, the recently appointed leader of Mayer Brown’s global Insurance Industry Group.  “His deep experience and understanding of the issues, coupled with his longstanding relationships with major companies in the US, Bermuda, Europe and Japan, will assist in diversifying our portfolio while also providing our clients with truly global solutions to their legal needs.”

Mr. Alberts cited Mayer Brown’s commitment to the insurance industry and its well established corporate and finance practices as key factors in his decision to join Mayer Brown. “The firm’s strong track record in M&A and corporate finance, along with its deep bench strength in the insurance field, as well as its global strength in Europe, Asia and Latin America, made it an ideal choice for me,” said Mr. Alberts.  “I look forward to working with the firm’s attorneys in New York and around the world to contribute to the continued growth of the insurance transactional practice.”

Added Philip Brandes, a co-leader of the Corporate & Securities practice, “Dave will be a significant asset in building our insurance and reinsurance industry corporate finance and M&A practice. He brings a wealth of experience and an essential, specialized set of skills that will help us accelerate our momentum in this sector.”

Mr. Alberts’ work for the life and non-life insurance industry includes corporate, regulatory, contract wording, insurance finance, credit enhancements, new product development, evaluation and management of run-off liabilities, and development and implementation of troubled company/portfolio exit strategies such as liability-based restructuring, financial reinsurance and portfolio transfers. He regularly advises on multi-jurisdictional and cross-border regulatory issues, including credit for reinsurance laws, risk transfer regulations, permissible investment under insurance investment laws and related collateralization requirements.

A graduate of  Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Mr.  Alberts received  a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law.
