13 September 2007 - International law firm Mayer Brown1 is delighted to announce the winner of its first Legal Business Prize. The prize for academic excellence was inaugurated at the College of Europe's closing ceremony for the academic year 2006/2007 on 22 June 2007 in Bruges, Belgium. The award seeks to encourage the study of EU law and in particular its importance to and impact on the business community. It is awarded to the candidate judged to have submitted the best thesis addressing this topic.

This year the prize was awarded to Antonios Bouchagiar, a Greek law student from the College of Europe. Antonios was chosen from among those students who submitted theses addressing relevant business issues such as network industries, market power and intellectual property rights. Entitled "Soft-Wars: The Role of the Essential Facilities Doctrine as Jus in Bello", the winner's outstanding thesis provided valuable insight into the fields of competition law and intellectual property rights.

The prize includes a six-month paid internship with Mayer Brown in Brussels and a cash prize of 2,000 Euros. It is open to candidates from the College of Europe who are studying law and are about to embark on their professional careers.

Mayer Brown is proud to join those from the private sector who support the College of Europe. As the leading post-graduate institution in European integration matters, it has educated generations of international scholars over more than 50 years.

Dr. Günter Burghardt, Senior Counsel in the Brussels office of Mayer Brown and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, commented:
"We would like to warmly congratulate Antonios on his success in winning this highly regarded award in its initial year. All entries were of an exceptionally high standard, but Antonios' was outstanding. It is a privilege to support such highly skilled students and facilitate their entry into successful, professional careers."

Kiran Desai, partner in the Brussels office of Mayer Brown, added:
"Mayer Brown has a commitment to contribute to thinking on legal issues important to the EU and to support young lawyers entering the profession."
