Mayer Brown Awards Legal Business Prize at the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium

22 July 2008
22 July 2008 - Leading international law firm Mayer Brown is delighted to announce the winner of its 2008 Legal Business Prize. The prize for academic excellence seeks to encourage the study of EU law and in particular its importance to and impact on the business community. It is awarded to the candidate judged to have submitted the best thesis addressing this topic.

This year the prize was awarded to Karolina Wojtal, a German law student from the College of Europe. Karolina was chosen from among those students who submitted theses addressing relevant business issues such as network industries, market power and intellectual property rights. Entitled "Unbundling in the European Railway Sector - A Critical Evaluation", the winner's outstanding thesis provided valuable insight into and a systematic overview of the current discussion about vertical separation in the railway sector.

The prize includes a six-month paid internship with Mayer Brown in Brussels and a cash prize of €2,000. It is open to candidates from the College of Europe who are studying law and are about to embark on their professional careers.

Dr. Günter Burghardt, Senior Counsel in the Brussels office of Mayer Brown and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, said: "We would like to warmly congratulate Karolina on her success in winning this highly regarded award in its second year. All entries were of an exceptionally high standard, but Karolina's was outstanding. It is a privilege to support such highly skilled students and facilitate their entry into successful, professional careers."

Kiran Desai, partner in the Brussels office of Mayer Brown, added: "Mayer Brown has a commitment to contribute to thinking on legal issues important to the EU and to support young lawyers entering the profession."
