On June 26, 2008, Mayer Brown attorney Kevin Ranlett was featured in C-SPAN's Washington Journal
for a full 30-minute segment on the Kennedy v. Louisiana
Supreme Court case decided the previous day. He discussed the case as well as an amicus
brief filed by Mayer Brown LLP on behalf of the National Association of Social Workers and other victims'-rights groups, which was cited repeatedly in the decision.
Mayer Brown argued that research showed authorizing the death penalty for child rapists would in fact hurt the victims of these heinous crimes, who would have to live through a greatly drawn-out judicial process, and would also decrease the likelihood that victims would report these crimes. The Supreme Court agreed.
