Mayer Brown appoints Mark Ryan as Partner-in-Charge of Washington, D.C. office

28 May 2008
Mayer Brown LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that Mark W. Ryan has been named Partner-in-Charge of its Washington, D. C. office.

Prior to assuming his new role, Mr. Ryan served as one of four global leaders of the firm's Litigation practice and chaired that practice in the Washington, D.C. office. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, antitrust and administrative proceedings. He joined the firm in 1981 following his graduation that year from Duke University School of Law and was named a partner of the firm in 1988.

"During his long and distinguished career at Mayer Brown, Mark has made many significant contributions to the success of our clients and the firm," said Mayer Brown Chairman James D. Holzhauer. "His outstanding track record as a lawyer and his proven skills as a leader and administrator make him an excellent choice to head our Washington, D.C. office."

Mr. Ryan succeeds Peter L. Scher, who is joining J.P. Morgan Chase as Executive Vice President for Global Government Relations and Public Policy.

"While we will greatly miss Peter as a partner and friend, he leaves with our thanks and best wishes for continued success at JP Morgan Chase, a long-time and valued client of the firm," Mr. Holzhauer said. "He has been an effective leader of our Washington, D.C. office and, previously, our Government and Global Trade practice."

Mr. Ryan represents clients in litigation related to antitrust, class actions, securities fraud and accountants' malpractice lawsuits in federal and state courts nationwide. He has broad experience with employment and covenant not to compete matters, and he has practiced before numerous federal agencies in contested proceedings. He will assume his new duties immediately, working with Mr. Scher to assure a smooth transition of leadership.

"I am honored and excited by the opportunity to lead one of Mayer Brown's most important offices," Mr. Ryan said. "We have an outstanding multi-disciplinary team, and I am confident that our positive momentum will continue to accelerate."

Mr. Scher said of his decision to join J.P. Morgan, "Since joining Mayer Brown in 2000, I have been privileged to work with exceptional partners and colleagues and be a part of the transformation of this firm into one of the truly elite and global law firms. As difficult as it is to leave Mayer Brown, the extraordinary opportunity I have been offered to play a senior role in one of the world's leading financial services firms is one I felt I could not turn down."
