Mayer Brown again stands alone atop appellate rankings in both Chambers USA and Legal 500 United States

17 June 2008
17 June 2008 - For a second consecutive year, the Supreme Court & Appellate practice of Mayer Brown LLP, a leading global law firm, is ranked in the top tier of the appellate law category in both Chambers USA and Legal 500 United States, a distinction achieved by no other law firm.

"The appellate group at Mayer Brown stands head and shoulders above its competitors," says Chambers. "The firm was one of the first to dedicate expertise to this area, and now has a specialist team comprising over 60 partners, counsel and associates. Fielding lawyers of the 'highest caliber,' the team is truly national in scope."

Chambers continues, "Clients declare its lawyers to be 'fantastic in providing support in previously uncharted territory' and team members' 'compelling oratory and strategic analysis is always favored in the courts.'"  The publication also cites four recent triumphs in high-profile business cases: Stoneridge Investment Partners v. Scientific Atlanta and Motorola, Philip Morris USA v Williams,Weyerhaeuser v Ross-Simmons Hardwood Lumber, and Credit Suisse First Boston v Billing.

"While the Supreme Court practice is widely lauded, the firm features in appellate cases in venues up and down the country. The group's expertise covers punitive damages, preemption, civil RICO, securities law, antitrust, patents, environmental law, employment law and tax, among other areas," Chambers concludes.

Similarly laudatory comments are offered by Legal 500. "In a discipline where bench strength is increasingly seen as a crucial factor for clients, Mayer Brown's prowess in the area continues unabated," the publication states. "Boasting the oldest and largest appellate practice in the country, clients enthuse that 'the depth and breadth of the practice is unrivalled,' due not only to its 'tremendous depth of expertise' but also to its ability to 'bring so many creative lawyers to work on matters.'"

Legal 500 continues, "The attorneys' 'huge amount of knowledge' is another attribute that attracts a steady stream of clients, one of whom suggests that 'other people are dabblers, who lack the years of specific experience in the area.' Another client sums up that the firm's 'extraordinary resources for handling a high-profile appeal, and their ability to marshal those resources to address a variety of issues, was quite impressive.'

"Supreme Court cases might attract the headlines, but the bulk of the firm's work comes from its ability to write top-class briefs, an area in which, say clients, the firm is 'simply brilliant - the best out there,' with a 'constellation of academic stars' who 'write better briefs than anyone.' The practice has also been actively involved in developing law in the appellate courts. Through the handling of dozens of cases in the federal appellate courts.the firm is often able to shape legal precedent before matters reach the Supreme Court," Legal 500 comments.
