1 March 2011

Mayer Brown JSM announced that 50 of its lawyers are ranked in the 2011 edition of Chambers Asia-Pacific, including 15 who achieved top-band ranking or higher.

The new Chambers edition also ranked Mayer Brown in 43 practice categories, 12 of which are top-band:  Aircraft Finance (China); Competition/Antitrust (China); Employment (China); Insurance: Contentious (China); Real Estate (China); Restructuring/Insolvency (China); Shipping: Finance (China); Restructuring/Insolvency (Thailand); Banking & Finance (Vietnam); Projects (Vietnam); Real Estate (Vietnam); and Corporate/M&A (Vietnam).

Mayer Brown JSM’s Hong Kong-based team won Chambers’ plaudits in the Aircraft Finance (China) category.  “This firm definitely belongs where it is in the rankings; it has long-standing relationships with the leading airlines,” Chamber sources say.

In explaining Mayer Brown’s top-band rankings in the Competition/Antitrust (China) category, Chambers says the firm “has enjoyed a particularly active year.” In the Employment, Insurance and Real Estate categories (all China), Chambers noted the firm’s particular strength in Hong Kong as well as its expansion into China.

Of the firm’s top-band-ranked Restructuring & Insolvency (China) practice, Chambers sources said, “The firm has a wide spectrum of talents, and is well connected to big banks." Chambers also noted Mayer Brown JSM's restructuring and insolvency work in Thailand, describing it as "an authority" in this area.

In Vietnam, Chambers highlighted various lawyers and practices including the Banking & Finance team which "is going from strength to strength in its main areas" and noted that "clients are quick to praise the firm's commercial acumen and ability to tackle sophisticated cross-border transactions."

Other practice areas in Vietnam that were listed in Chambers' top-band rankings include Corporate/M&A which "offers a flexible and well-experienced team" with a "deep local knowledge", the Projects team which "is one of the few with the sophistication to manage cross-border transactions, both inwards and outwards", and Real Estate which is described as "unquestionably a leader in the field."
