Mayer Brown advises on the sale of The Independent

26 March 2010 – Leading international law firm Mayer Brown is advising Independent News & Media plc in connection with the disposal of its UK titles – The Independent and The Independent on Sunday and related website,

The acquisition, which was announced yesterday, is by Independent Print Limited – owner of The Evening Standard and controlled by the family of Mr Alexander Lebedev.

Stephanie Bates, Corporate partner at Mayer Brown, said: "As long-standing legal advisers to Independent News & Media group the London team at Mayer Brown was very well placed to advise on such a significant transaction for the company.”

The Mayer Brown team was led by corporate partners Stephanie Bates and Andrew Stewart, assisted by corporate associates Aisling McKeown and Edwina Palmer. Other members of the Mayer Brown team included: Stephen Smith advising on competition matters, Jennifer McGrandle and Christopher Fisher in relation to employment matters, James Dodsworth and Ben Henry in relation to property matters and James Hill in relation to tax matters.

Tulloch & Co advised Independent Print Limited.

Mayer Brown’s corporate team also advised the five shareholders in the agreement to sell Camelot, the UK’s national lottery operator which was announced yesterday.
