Mayer Brown partner Mickey Kantor to chair 12-member “Los Angeles 2020 Commission”

1 April 2013

Michael (Mickey) Kantor, a partner in the Los Angeles office of global law firm Mayer Brown and a former US Secretary of Commerce and US Trade Representative under President Bill Clinton, will chair the “Los Angeles 2020 Commission,” an independent 12-member panel that will assess Los Angeles’ financial picture and recommend strategies for job creation and eliminating the city’s projected $165 million budget deficit for fiscal 2014.

Members of the panel, which Mr. Cantor assembled at the request of City Council President Herb Wesson, include former California Governor Gray Davis, former US Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, former Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner and other prominent political, civic, business, education and labor leaders. The Commission’s recommendations will be presented later this year.

“The Commission’s task will be to recommend ways to grow business in this great city of ours and make structural changes from a financial perspective that will move Los Angeles in the right direction,” Mr. Kantor said.

At Mayer Brown, Mr. Kantor concentrates his practice on corporate and financial international transactions. He has extensive experience in market access issues as well as the expansion of client activities in foreign markets through trade, direct investment, joint ventures and strategic business alliances.

Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Mr. Kantor was the US Secretary of Commerce (1996-97) and the US Trade Representative (1993-96). President Bill Clinton recently said of Mr. Kantor, “He may well be the most effective trade ambassador our country has ever had.”

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Kantor has been the recipient of several awards including, the Civic Medal of Honor by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce in 2013; the Order of the Southern Cross Award by the Government of Brazil, 2001; the William O. Douglas Award by the Constitutional Rights Foundation; the Thomas Jefferson Distinguished Public Service Medal from the Center for the Study of the Presidency; the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award from the Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation; and the Elihu Root Distinguished Lecturer, Council on Foreign Relations.
