Mayer Brown recognized for mentoring Chicago’s economically disadvantaged youth

28 August 2015

Mayer Brown has been recognized with a “Law Firm/Corporate Partnership” award by Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth. The award is presented as part of the organization’s annual My Hero Awards, which honor leadership in and commitment to mentoring young people from disadvantaged communities across the Chicago area. Mayer Brown was recognized for its long-term support of LINK Unlimited Scholars, Chicago’s oldest and highest performing mentoring and college preparatory organization for economically disadvantaged African American high school students.

For more than 20 years, more than 50 Mayer Brown lawyers and staff have served as LINK mentors, benefactors, board members and volunteers. A mentor or benefactor sponsors a student by contributing to the cost of their private school education. A mentor will also connect with their student at least twice a month and participate in LINK-sponsored events.

Mayer Brown’s involvement with LINK was spearheaded by Real Estate partner John Gearen, who has recruited many Mayer Brown mentors and benefactors, served as LINK board chair (1999-2004) and sponsored six students with his wife, Ann. Corporate & Securities partner Paul Crimmins currently serves as board chair and has mentored three LINK students. Mayer Brown Chairman Paul Theiss and his wife, Susan, are mentoring their third student.

Created by the Chicago Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Foundation, Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth supports mentoring and tutoring programs in disadvantaged Chicago-area communities by awarding grants, recruiting volunteers from the legal profession and providing professional development assistance.
