Mayer Brown strengthens global real estate offerings in New York with relocation of partner Kwon Lee

1 October 2015
Mayer Brown announced today that partner Kwon Lee has permanently relocated to the firm’s New York office from Hong Kong.

“Kwon’s arrival at our New York office significantly broadens Mayer Brown’s ability to serve clients based in Korea and elsewhere in Asia who wish to invest in real estate here—one of the world’s top real estate markets—and in other foreign cities,” said Richard Spehr, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown’s New York office.

Mr. Lee, who joined the firm in February, focuses his practice on outbound alternative capital investment from Asia as well as inbound investment into Asia, particularly on real estate investment matters. He has more than 20 years of experience advising on a wide range of cross-border transactions. He has advised pension funds and major asset management companies/LPs from Asia on hard asset acquisitions (such as commercial buildings and logistics), mezzanine, senior loan, and fund-of-fund transactions in the United States and Europe as well as Asian construction companies, financial institutions and conglomerates seeking investment into large-scale overseas development projects. An investment advisor to local and central government authorities in Korea, he sits on the investment review board of several pension funds in Korea.

In addition to working with Korean clients, Mr. Lee has close working relationships with major investors and funds in Australia, China, France, Germany, Japan, Middle Eastern countries, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the United States.

“Kwon is well-known around the globe for his strong track record of advising clients in various countries on outbound real estate investments,” said Jeff Usow, co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Real Estate practice. “Since joining Mayer Brown earlier this year, he has played a key role in further expanding the firm’s global real estate offering.”

Before he joined Mayer Brown, Mr. Lee was a senior member at a leading Korean law firm, where he was responsible for cross-border real estate and construction practice group after serving at a Wall Street law firm in New York earlier in his career.

He has been described as “one of the most impressive real estate lawyers in Korea” and “a top player in the real estate market, especially with regards to cross-border transactions” by leading legal directory Chambers & Partners. Chambers also named Mr. Lee an “Eminent Practitioner” in its 2014 guide.

Mr. Lee is admitted to the New York and the Illinois bars. He earned an MA from the University of Chicago; a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School; and a BA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is fluent in English and Korean.
