Mayer Brown partner John Nadolenco named to Daily Journal’s “Top 100 Lawyers of 2016” in California

27 September 2016

Mayer Brown announced that Los Angeles-based partner John Nadolenco has been named one of California’s “Top 100 Lawyers of 2016” by the Daily Journal, a leading California publication.

Mr. Nadolenco was recognized for his work leading Pasadena-based Spokeo Inc. to victory in the US Supreme Court in an injury-in-fact case involving one of its users. “If we step back, we’ve always been looking for a way to defeat these no-injury class actions,” Mr. Nadolenco told the Daily Journal. “We used to argue that class action isn’t the right way to proceed and the Ninth Circuit shut the door on that theory. So, we went back to the drawing board.”

That’s when he and his team devised a theory relying on Article III standing, which eventually persuaded the Supreme Court to reverse the Ninth Circuit’s ruling. Spokeo, the biggest case of Mr. Nadolenco’s career, has already been cited in numerous class action proceedings.

In addition to winning a high-profile Supreme Court case, Mr. Nadolenco represents Brazil in an ongoing battle to return a precious emerald to the country, the Daily Journal noted. “I’m definitely not coasting, but I definitely am on cloud nine to be sure,” he told the publication about his once-in-a-career year. “Having those two cases happen in the same year was something pretty unexpected and spectacular.”

Mr. Nadolenco is a member of Mayer Brown’s partnership board and is also a co-leader of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice. He focuses his practice on high-stakes cases and class-action defense, including defending consumer class actions, employment class actions, and antitrust, securities and derivative cases.
