Mayer Brown partner John Mancini named a 2016 “Intellectual Property Trailblazer” by The National Law Journal

8 June 2016
Mayer Brown announced that Intellectual Property partner John Mancini (New York) has been named to The National Law Journal’s (NLJ) inaugural list of “Intellectual Property Trailblazers.” The list recognizes those “who continue to make their mark in various aspects of legal work in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret law.”

“My success in the creation of new IP law is a result of the contributions from a preeminent team of Mayer Brown lawyers who have collaborated across various practice areas and jurisdictions to counsel clients over many years,” Mr. Mancini said.

Since the dawn of the internet, Mr. Mancini has been involved in the interconnection of IP rights and new technologies, balancing the interests of clients with the limitations of IP law in creative ways. He represented the first online, digital music distribution service and has since advised many of the world’s most notable new technology companies. “I was there right at the beginning and developed a specialty,” he told NLJ.

The NLJ also noted Mr. Mancini’s win in a case representing Google and YouTube against Viacom involving the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s (DMCA) “safe harbor” provision. “The claim was that user activity made YouTube and its new owner Google liable for any copyright infringement by its users. Google and YouTube were the first time the DMCA was really tested in court,” he said.
