Mayer Brown opens office in Mexico City

12 August 2015

Mayer Brown announced today the opening of its office in Mexico City. The firm actively serves clients operating and investing in the oil, gas and power industries in Mexico. With the launch of the Mexico City office, Mayer Brown solidifies its position as a market leader in connection with Mexico’s energy reform.

“The opening of this office is the culmination of a firm-wide effort which began in 2013, when Mayer Brown anticipated the huge potential of Mexico in light of the likely opening of the hydrocarbons sector for the first time since 1938 and the reform of the power sector,” said Dallas Parker, leader of Mayer Brown’s Mexico Energy Reform initiative. “With long-standing experience in Mexican projects and financings and a strong track record of advising clients on international oil, gas and power transactions, Mayer Brown’s Global Energy lawyers are well-prepared to leverage their knowledge to counsel companies seeking to operate and invest in Mexico, a new frontier for the energy industry. Supported by a fully bilingual and bicultural team of lawyers, Mayer Brown’s Mexico City office will be an important base for the energy experience that has developed at the firm over decades.”

Energy partner Francisco Mendez will advise clients on energy matters from the firm’s Mexico City and Houston offices. A Mexico City native, Mr. Mendez has worked in Mexico both on the ground and from offices throughout the region during the course of his career. Mr. Mendez spent nearly 20 years at ExxonMobil Corporation as in-house counsel for Latin America, where he most recently advised the company on the opening of the oil and gas industry in Mexico to the private sector. Mr. Mendez also was involved in the formation of the Mexican Hydrocarbons Association, the first such industry association in Mexico. In addition to Mexico, Mr. Mendez has extensive experience in handling oil, gas and power matters in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Guyana.

Additional Mayer Brown energy lawyers who are based in other firm offices will support the firm’s clients in Mexico, including Global Energy group partners Alexandre Chequer, Dallas Parker, Jose Valera and Pablo Ferrante, and associate Gabriel Salinas. The team will work closely with other Mayer Brown lawyers in the firm’s extensive global network of offices and practices in the United States, Europe, Brazil and Asia to better serve companies in Mexico and from around the globe that are looking to invest in Mexico’s resource-rich hydrocarbon base and to augment its electric generation sectors.

The 2015 edition of Chambers USA ranked Mayer Brown as a Band One law firm in the Latin American Investment – Texas category, and described the firm as “a top choice for Latin American investment within LNG and oil and gas.”

Mayer Brown’s Mexico City office is located at Torre Esmeralda II, Blvd. Manuel Ávila Camacho 36, Lomas de Chapultepec, Miguel Hidalgo, 11000 Ciudad de México, D.F., México.
