Mayer Brown named a Law360 “Firm of the Year”

17 February 2017

Mayer Brown has been named a “Firm of the Year” by Law360 for earning seven “Practice Group of the Year” awards, which include the Appellate, Banking, Class Action, Food & Beverage, Life Sciences, Technology and Transportation categories. The award recognizes law firms that “know their strengths, focus on constant improvement and don't shy away from high-stakes work.”

Law360 named Mayer Brown as a winner in the Appellate category for going undefeated in the four cases it argued before the US Supreme Court last term, including a big win for businesses fighting statutory class action claims with the high court’s Spokeo ruling. “We believe collaboration among a lot of people is the best way to handle these cases and we have a lot of talented lawyers,” partner Andy Pincus told Law360. Defending banks against high-profile Anti-Terrorism Act cases and counseling clients through tens of billions of dollars in financing work, often through never-before-seen structures, earned Mayer Brown a Law360 Banking Group of the Year distinction. Partner David Duffee discussed the innovation the firm brings to every deal and piece of litigation, which is part of the firm’s culture of problem-solving and brainstorming. He told Law360 “we are lawyers who understand law and can apply the law creatively and innovatively to situations.” (View article.)

Mayer Brown landed a spot in Law360’s Class Action Group of the Year for its successful efforts to defend clients across a broad range of industries, including the winning defense work in Spokeo, which is significantly reshaping the parameters of class action law. According to partner Archis Parasharami, Spokeo highlighted two of the firm’s strengths in class action defense work: strategic thinking regarding the best legal approach to an issue as well as the integration of class action, appellate and subject-matter experts to make sure that strategy is applied most effectively. Mayer Brown was named one of Law360’s Food & Beverage Groups of the Year for courtroom and transactional victories on behalf of a diverse portfolio of major food companies ranging from classic cuisine to organic snacks. “We’re talking about a very wide variety of clientele, and one of the key things we do here is we spend time to invest in getting to know the clients, their business, their challenges and their competitors,” partner Carmine Zarlenga said to the publication. Named a Law360 Life Sciences Group of the Year, Mayer Brown pulled off a string of courtroom victories in 2016 that included notable intellectual property decisions, while navigating big-budget transactions and settling tax controversies for top-level clients. Partner Reb Wheeler attributes the success of the life sciences practice to the group’s strong collaboration across different specialties, allowing the lawyers to work with clients on day-to-day matters and to be there when major litigation and transactions arise. “What’s most important to us is the relationships we have with our clients,” he told Law360. Recognizing the firm’s courtroom victories on behalf of a wide range of companies, including Silicon Valley giants, and particularly strong tech IP and appellate litigation capabilities, Law360 named Mayer Brown a Technology Group of the Year. Mr. Pincus told the publication that “you’ve got to start out with an understanding of the client’s business,” how the legal problem relates to their business and how it can be solved in a way that works for them. This was the firm’s strategy in Spokeo, a win that has already helped other tech companies. (View article.)

Law360 also honored Mayer Brown with a Transportation Group of the Year award for the firm’s work arranging an innovative public-private partnership for a Texas highway project, scoring litigation wins for industry heavyweights and continuing work for the iconic Panama Canal Authority. Partner Joe Seliga said in Law360 that one of the practice’s core strengths is “the continuity that we bring as a team to the matters and the clients we work with.” (View article.)

Law360 editors reviewed more than 700 submissions, recognizing 80 law firms as winners in 30 “Practice Group of the Year” categories.
