Law360 names Mayer Brown a “Practice Group of the Year” in Tax and Transportation categories

28 January 2016

Mayer Brown has been named by Law360 as a “Practice Group of the Year” for 2015 in two categories: “Tax” and “Transportation.” The award recognizes law firms “that came through for clients by sealing the biggest deals and securing wins in high-stakes litigation.”

Law360 chose Mayer Brown as a winner in the Tax category for the firm’s work on “precedent-setting cases and multi-billion dollar transactions” in 2015. On the tax controversy side, Law360 cited Mayer Brown’s securing a victory for Altera Corporation in “one of the most important federal tax cases of the year” with a US Tax Court ruling that “establishes new law concerning the limits of [Internal Revenue Service] rulemaking authority and the scope of the IRS’s powers to reallocate income.” The publication also noted US Tax Court work by Mayer Brown for the Exelon and Eaton corporations. On the transactional side, the publication highlighted Mayer Brown’s representation of Altice NV in its $17.7 billion Cablevision purchase and its acquisition of a majority stake in the $9.1 billion Suddenlink transaction, big deals which allowed Altice “to set foot in the U.S. market.” The publication also noted the firm’s advising Altice’s subsidiary, Numericable, on its €17 billion acquisition of a French telecom operator; counseling Kaiser Foundation Health Plan on the first earthquake catastrophe bond sponsored by a non-insurance company; advising Barclays Capital Inc., Credit Agricole and J.P. Morgan as underwriters of $1.25 billion fixed and floating rate notes; and representing The Dow Chemical Company in three sales with multijurisdictional issues. (View article.)

Mayer Brown’s counsel on “hundreds of millions of dollars” in transportation-related public-private partnerships helped “several major infrastructure projects get off the ground in the past year,” earning the firm a top spot in the Transportation category. Law360 noted that Mayer Brown is “leading the nation in supporting new infrastructure,” citing the firm’s work advising the Texas Department of Transportation in a competitive procurement for and the structuring of a public-private partnership for the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the Texas SH 183 managed lanes project. Law360 also referenced Mayer Brown’s advising the underwriter for the $2.3 billion All Aboard Florida project to create a daily train service between Miami and Orlando. The publication noted that the new line—“the first privately funded and operated passenger rail service in the United States since Amtrak's creation”—will “help remove 3 million vehicles from roads each year” and cited a report estimating that the construction phase will create 10,000 jobs annually. As other examples of the firm’s 2015 transportation work, Law360 mentioned Mayer Brown’s representing the Port Authority of Jamaica in the concession of the Kingston Container Terminal and advising the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority on a public-private partnership for a major port expansion project.
