Law360 names five Mayer Brown partners 2017 “Rising Stars”

14 August 2017

Mayer Brown announced that five of the firm’s partners have been named 2017 “Rising Stars” by Law360: Government and Infrastructure partner Mitch Holzrichter (Chicago); Supreme Court & Appellate partner Paul Hughes (Washington DC); Intellectual Property partner Rob Pluta (Chicago); Employment & Benefits partner Grace Shie (Washington DC); and Banking & Finance partner Adam Wolk (New York). This annual recognition honors litigators and dealmakers under 40 “whose legal accomplishments transcend their age,” the publication said.

Mitch Holzrichter: Mr. Holzrichter was selected as a Rising Star in the Transportation category (view article) for his prominent role in “crafting financing deals for several high-profile infrastructure projects,” said Law360. The publication highlighted Mr. Holzrichter’s role as a lead Mayer Brown lawyer representing the Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority on its $2.6 billion, 40-year lease agreement with Aerostar Airport Holdings LLC to privatize the San Juan, Puerto Rico airport – a first-of-its-kind transaction. Law360 also pointed to Mr. Holzrichter’s recent experience serving in Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s office as deputy chief of staff for legislative affairs and deputy general counsel.

Paul Hughes: Law360 identified Mr. Hughes as a Rising Star in the Appellate category (view article) for having argued twice before the US Supreme Court and numerous times in the courts of appeals. In 2016, Mr. Hughes argued and won a significant matter concerning the interpretation of the Prison Litigation Reform Act of 1995. In 2017, Mr. Hughes won a landmark Supreme Court victory for Impression Products, a case essential to resale and repair markets for patented goods. Law360 also focused on Mr. Hughes’ work on behalf of immigrants ensnared by the administration’s “Travel Ban.”

Rob Pluta: Having appeared before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board more than 50 times and securing significant wins for high-tech clients, Mr. Pluta was named a Rising Star in the Technology category (view article). Law360 called attention to his “massive win” last year as lead counsel for LG Electronics Inc. in a consolidated action challenging graphics processing patents. Additionally, the publication noted Mr. Pluta’s experience as senior intellectual property counsel at Motorola Mobility LLC during the time of the “smart phone wars” that involved high-stakes patent litigation.

Grace Shie: Ms. Shie was recognized as one of just three Rising Stars in the Immigration category (view article) for her work managing global mobility programs for multinational companies. Law360 highlighted her leadership of such programs, including for a large security and aerospace company for whom she managed the full global mobility portfolio ranging from visa transactions and border-crossing issues to workforce matters associated with mergers and acquisitions. The publication noted Ms. Shie’s impressive experience in Hong Kong managing the “Greater China” immigration practice for a major global law firm for several years in the midst of the 2009 financial crisis.

Adam Wolk: Mr. Wolk was honored as a Rising Star in the Banking category (view article). He was recognized for his strong track record of helping companies secure the financing to get their businesses moving forward and of helping lenders provide such financing. Law360 highlighted Mr. Wolk’s key role on the Mayer Brown team that helped Yum! Brands achieve a major restructuring, in which he handled a complex $3.5 billion senior secured credit facility that closed in June 2016. The publication also called attention to Mr. Wolk’s recent representation of lenders in various matters and of private equity firm The Jordan Company on the financing needs of several of its portfolio companies.
