Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that Joel Moss has joined the firm in New York as a partner in the Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Insolvency practice. Previously, Mr. Moss was a director at Barclays in New York, where he handled bankruptcy and restructuring matters in the US.
“Joel is highly regarded in the New York market for his deep experience in providing legal counsel to financial institutions on a wide range of bankruptcy matters, such as Chapter 11 representations, debtor-in-possession (DIP) financings, section 363 M&A transactions and matters involving distressed debt,” said Brian Trust, a New York partner and co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Insolvency practice. “Joel’s combination of in-house and law firm experience will greatly benefit financial institution clients facing bankruptcy-related challenges.”
At Barclays, Mr. Moss was the primary lawyer responsible for a broad range of bankruptcy and restructuring matters as well as the bank’s US resolution plan (“living will”) required pursuant to the Dodd-Frank Act. His responsibilities included advising trading desks on bankruptcy issues relating to proposed and existing investments; reviewing and negotiating restructuring-related documentation for Barclays as agent in a number of distressed situations; negotiating and reviewing documentation for DIP financings in which Barclays was lender; and advising various business units on bankruptcy risks relating to certain transactions.
Prior to joining Barclays, Mr. Moss was with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, where he played a key role in all aspects of that firm’s broad-based restructuring practice. He advised Barclays on several notable matters, including the bank’s acquisition of the US broker-dealer business of Lehman Brothers and as creditor of various Lehman Brothers entities in their Chapter 11 cases and SIPA liquidation proceeding. Mr. Moss also represented the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as creditor and commercial mortgage-backed securities certificate holder in the Chapter 11 cases of Extended Stay Inc. and its affiliates. In addition, he represented KSL Capital Partners in the Chapter 11 cases of MSR Resort hotel group.
“Mayer Brown is a world-class global law firm and has an outstanding Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Insolvency practice,” said Mr. Moss. “This combination creates an ideal platform for me to advise financial institution and fund clients that require counsel on complex domestic and cross-border bankruptcy related matters. I am eager to apply my knowledge to further strengthen the firm’s bankruptcy and restructuring capabilities and to add depth to key complementary practice areas, such as structured finance, derivatives, regulatory and real estate.”
Mr. Moss earned a JD magna cum laude from New York University School of Law and received an AB magna cum laude from Duke University.
