Utah Consumer Privacy Act: What You Need to Know

Share

Following in the footsteps of California, Virginia and Colorado, Utah became the fourth state to pass comprehensive consumer data privacy legislation. The Utah Consumer Privacy Act (“UCPA”) was signed into law on March 24, 2022 and takes effect on December 31, 2023. The swift and unanimous passage of a complex, comprehensive data privacy law would be remarkable under any circumstance, but the UCPA’s rapid enactment is particularly noteworthy given the number of state law proposals that remain bogged down or that died already this year. While bills are still alive in some other states, Utah is the first major state law domino to fall in 2022 and the first state to enact comprehensive data privacy legislation since Colorado in July 2021.

Join Mayer Brown at Silicon Slopes to learn more. We will discuss:

  • The scope of the UCPA;
  • How the UCPA compares with the other state privacy laws in the areas of exemptions, data subject rights and data controller obligations;
  • Important dates related to the new law;
  • Lessons learned from California;
  • What companies should be doing now to prepare; and
  • Tips for investors in emerging companies.
