12 May 2010 – Gazprom has finally succeeded against an affiliate of US company Moncrief Oil International, Inc. in a dispute before the Regional Court of Berlin, in which Moncrief demanded interest in a company which exploits the gas field Yushno-Russkoye in Siberia. The claimed interest was worth several billion US$. The judgment is final. Moncrief waived its right to appeal. Mayer Brown LLP advised Gazprom on the dispute.
Already in 2005 Moncrief had filed a suit before a trial court in Texas against Gazprom, Wintershall and the E.ON subsidiary Ruhrgas requesting a share in the exploitation of the gas field. The Texas court dismissed the case due to lack of jurisdiction. Therefore, Moncrief demanded compensation before the District Court of Frankenthal from BASF and Wintershall. Mayer Brown advised BASF and Wintershall. The judges dismissed the billion Euro action in 2007 as unfounded.
The Mayer Brown team included Dr. Mark C. Hilgard (lead) and Dr. Jan Kraayvanger (both litigation, both Frankfurt am Main) as well as associate Dr. Martin Lorenz (litigation, Frankfurt am Main).
