Our dear friend and colleague, John Van de Kamp
, 81, passed away on March 14, 2017, following a brief illness. John joined Mayer Brown’s Los Angeles Government Relations & Public Law practice in 2012.
In addition to his more than 25 years in private practice, John had a storied career in public service. A remembrance in the Los Angeles Times calls John “a towering political figure”—certainly no exaggeration, given his myriad accomplishments and the strong personal conviction he brought to every facet of his work. He was the first federal public defender in Los Angeles and then served as Los Angeles County District Attorney and California Attorney General.
John was also active in public and community life, serving as president of the California Bar Association and in leadership roles with the Planning and Conservation League, the LA Conservation Corps and many other civic organizations.
Yet John was extraordinarily humble, despite the stature he had achieved as a lawyer, public figure and humanitarian. John was a much-loved and admired member of the Mayer Brown family, and we are deeply saddened by his passing.
