Greg Oguss advises multinational insurers, reinsurers and alternative asset managers on new business and back-book reinsurance, acquisitions, divestitures, investment management transactions, debt and equity investments, and domestic and international regulatory matters. Greg is a leading voice in commercial and legal strategy and public policy debates regarding cross-border asset-intensive reinsurance and private equity’s participation in the life insurance space in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia.

Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Greg served as global chief deal counsel for Apollo Global Management Inc.’s subsidiary Athene Holding Ltd., where he was based in Bermuda for five years of his tenure.

Athene’s acquisition of a Japanese whole of life block from FWD Life Insurance Co., Ltd., along with outbound mortality risk reinsurance on the block provided by a large European insurer and reserve financing provided by a large US reinsurer.*
Athene’s flow reinsurance of annuity and whole of life business issued by multiple blue-chip Japanese insurance companies.*
Athene’s flow reinsurance of endowment contracts and indexed universal life business issued by multiple blue-ship Singapore insurance companies.*

The acquisition by a fund controlled by Apollo Global Management, Inc. of a minority equity stake in Australian life insurer Challenger Limited.*
Athene’s acquisition of a block of annuities from Jackson National Life Insurance Company, along with an equity investment in Jackson by Athene and Apollo and contingent letters of credit provided by multiple European banks.*
Athene’s acquisition of pension liabilities from a large UK life insurer, along with a contingent letter of credit provided by Wells Fargo.*
The negotiation of framework agreements in connection with the initial capital raise for and formation of Athene and Apollo’s ACRA sidecar as well as the retrocession of third-party and affiliate business from Athene to ACRA.*
Athene’s acquisition of a block of annuities from Lincoln National Life Insurance Company, along with a contingent letter of credit provided by Wells Fargo.*
The acquisition by a consortium led by Apollo and Athene of Voya Financial’s US fixed, fixed indexed and variable annuity business.*
