Joe Callaghan is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution group and a key member of the Firm’s Mass Torts & Products Liability practices. He is a skilled litigator and experienced corporate counselor and focuses his practice on products liability, including mass torts and class actions, as well as complex commercial litigation, in state and federal courts and alternative dispute resolution proceedings. Joe has significant experience in all phases of litigation, from pre-suit investigations and negotiations through trial and appeal. He serves clients including Fortune 100 multinational conglomerates, chemical and automotive product manufacturers, and cutting-edge tech companies.

Joe is a valued member of the Firm’s teams that serve as national counsel for 3M in litigation concerning PFAS-based chemicals and for Union Carbide Corporation, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, with respect to its historical sales of asbestos-containing products. He is integrally involved in the development, implementation, and execution of complex litigation strategies in thousands of lawsuits in jurisdictions across the country, including by coordinating the efforts of regional and local counsel and overseeing discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation. He also works closely with fact and expert witnesses that are central to the defense of these mass toxic tort actions. Joe has also been tapped as a member of trial teams in high-stakes lawsuits seeking damages awards ranging from multiple millions to billions of dollars.

From 2017 to 2022, Joe has been listed as a Rising Star and “Top Rated Class Action & Mass Torts Attorney” in Thomson Reuters’ Super Lawyers publication. Joe also received the 2016 Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service from the Judges of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.
