Shout out to Mayer Brown partners Matthew Ingber and Christopher Houpt, who worked alongside pro bono teams from Shook, Hardy & Bacon and Baker & Hostetler to secure a major litigation win for Michael Sockwell, a man who spent 35 years on Alabama’s death row. In a 2-1 decision, the Eleventh Circuit granted Sockwell’s habeas petition, finding that prosecutors “repeatedly and purposefully struck Black jurors, making only dubious and capricious excuses,” in violation of his 14th Amendment rights. The victory is the result of years of dedicated advocacy by the cross-firm team.
