Mayer Brown announced today that Jonathan Becker has joined the firm’s Washington DC office as a partner in the Public Policy, Regulatory & Political Law practice. He joins from Greenberg Traurig LLP.

“Jonathan’s nearly two decades of experience working at the intersection of law, policy, and politics across all three branches of government, as well as in private practice, adds further breadth to our leading government team across the globe,” said Duane Layton, a co-leader of Mayer Brown’s Public Policy, Regulatory & Political Law practice. “Our clients will benefit immediately from his extensive experience in government relations, political law and compliance, legislative initiatives and internal and congressional investigations.”

Mr. Becker provides legal guidance on policy issues, including antitrust, technology, telecommunications, intellectual property, media and transportation. He helps clients develop and execute complex public policy advocacy strategies in Congress and in executive branch agencies, including the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice (DOJ). He also guides clients through congressional investigations and the process of testifying before congressional committees.

Mr. Becker previously worked in government relations, including as a public policy consultant at a Fortune 100 company, and at a leading government relations firm. On Capitol Hill, Mr. Becker spent six years working for Senator Amy Klobuchar, first as chief counsel and then as chief of staff. In that capacity, he advised Senator Klobuchar on her work as a member of the Judiciary and Commerce Committees and provided guidance on policy issues including antitrust, telecommunications, intellectual property, media and transportation.

“Mayer Brown’s longstanding reputation for handling top-quality policy work in Washington, outstanding international reach, collaborative culture and superior talent, make the firm an ideal fit for my practice,” said Mr. Becker. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues and helping our clients navigate the complex legislative and regulatory landscape.”

During the earlier part of his career, Mr. Becker practiced law at a large, national law firm. Before that, he served as a law clerk on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; a special assistant to the senior counsel for nominations in the White House; and a special assistant in DOJ’s Antitrust Division.

“Jonathan’s arrival complements our existing capabilities in Washington and further strengthens our legislative and public policy capabilities—particularly in the area of governmental investigations,” said Raj De, the managing partner of Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office.

Most recently, Andrew Olmem joined the firm’s Public Policy, Regulatory & Political Law practice from the previous administration, where he served as the deputy assistant to the president for economic policy and deputy director of the National Economic Council.
