Mayer Brown announced that partner and Director of Diversity & Inclusion Jeremiah DeBerry (New York) has been selected to Crain's New York Business’ 2021 list of “Notable Black Leaders and Executives.” This list recognizes Black men and women who have enhanced New York City with their professional, communal and philanthropic achievements, particularly in matters of diversity and inclusion (D&I).

As the director of diversity & inclusion at Mayer Brown, Mr. DeBerry ensures that the firm strives to fulfill its commitment to enhancing diversity in the legal profession. In this capacity, he advises on all aspects of the firm’s efforts to recruit, hire, develop and promote diverse and women lawyers. In addition, he oversees the development and implementation of D&I policies for all of the firm’s US offices.

He also participates on the firm’s global Partner Promotion Committee to ensure that D&I principles are incorporated into partner promotion decisions. As a result of his advocacy and participation on the committee, the firm has increased the diversity of its partnership by almost 200 percent over the past few years.

Additionally, he works closely with community organizations in the New York City area. Most recently, Mr. DeBerry helped establish a task force leadership team at Mayer Brown, “Project Equity,” in response to recent examples of racial injustice and increased focus on social justice. This initiative focuses on a number of areas, including voter rights, access to housing and economic stability, and criminal justice and policing reform.

Mr. DeBerry has been frequently recognized for his leadership and contributions to improving D&I in the workplace, particularly in the legal profession. He was named a recipient of City & State’s 2019 “The Responsible 100” award. He was also named to Lawyers of Color’s inaugural list of “Nation’s Best 2019” in the Eastern regional category and named to The National Law Journal’s list of 2019 “Equality Trailblazers.”
