Mayer Brown was named to The National Law Journal’s (NLJ) list of 2021 “Legal Technology Trailblazers,” which recognizes innovations that advance the legal industry through technology.

NLJ recognized Mayer Brown for its global innovation program, embrio, which leverages the firm’s expertise in legal process improvement and knowledge management to partner with clients in designing and delivering creative ways to solve client problems. The program is run by several global directors at Mayer Brown representing a variety of departments and committees, including IT, client solutions, knowledge management, client value and firm management.

According to Rebecca Eisner, partner and a Chicago-based member of the firm’s global management committee, “Many people think innovation is just about technology, but it’s really about people and processes as well as technology, and embrio enables those discussions.” For example, the embrio program recently partnered with French bank Société Générale and its in-house counsel, data scientists and engineers to develop an AI-based tool to analyze previously negotiated settlements with government agencies. Mayer Brown’s lawyers helped inform the strategy for the project, and now have other clients inquiring about those capabilities.

This recognition further highlights Mayer Brown’s commitment and unique approach to serving clients and seeking to expand relationships by discussing potential solutions through innovation products.

“Our approach is to really make it client-centered, rather than being all things to all people. This is about solving problems, not creating revenue from high-volume, low-cost work,” added Ms. Eisner.
