Mayer Brown Legal Update
In TC Heartland LLC v. Kraft Foods Group Brands LLC, the Supreme Court addressed the patent venue statute, 28 U.S.C. § 1400(b), and reversed nearly three decades of Federal Circuit law. The Court’s holding will likely have significant implications with respect to so-called patent magnet jurisdictions, such as the Eastern District of Texas, which currently adjudicate a significant portion of the nation’s patent disputes.

Mayer Brown has appointed Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Sally Davies to the position of London senior partner. Sally has been elected to a five-year term effective 1 July 2017 and succeeds Sean Connolly, who steps down at the end of June after 10 years in the role.

Mayer Brown Legal Update
On 9 May 2017, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate of China issued rules that offer a clarification of the scope of criminal sanctions for breaches involving personal information in the form of Interpretations on Several Issues concerning the Application of Law in the Handling of Criminal Cases Involving Infringement of Citizens' Personal Information ("Interpretations"). The Interpretations shed light on the scope of the offence of "infringement of citizens' personal information" provided by Article 253 of the PRC Criminal Law. The Interpretations will come into force on 1 June 2017, the same date as the effective date of the PRC Cybersecurity Law (CSL) which was released on 7 November last year.
