Mayer Brown recognized by Financial Times as one of the most innovative US law firms for third consecutive year

For the third consecutive year, Mayer Brown has been ranked among the most innovative United States law firms by the Financial Times in its annual special report, “US Innovative Lawyers,” ranking 12th in the 2012 edition. The report ranks “law firms that are bringing fresh thinking and practices to solving business problems in America,” the Financial Times said.
The report recognized Mayer Brown’s achievements in the following categories:
• Corporate Law – Mayer Brown tied for first place, with a “Standout” ranking for its work in negotiating a strategic sourcing agreement for client CEMEX that will save the client an anticipated $1 billion. Chicago Business & Technology Sourcing partner Brad Peterson led the Mayer Brown team.
In addition, Mayer Brown received a “Commended” ranking in this category for the firm’s work on the privatization of the San Juan, Puerto Rico airport. Mayer Brown “balanced the interests of airlines, government agencies and lenders,” the report said. The team was led by Chicago Government & Global Trade partner John Schmidt.
• Innovative Individuals – Mr. Peterson was selected as one of ten Innovative Individuals for his work on the CEMEX matter, “where he looked at contractual terms through the perspective of value to the parties, rather than risk…The ramifications of this economic evaluation of legal clauses for commercial contracts could be game-changing,” the report said.
• Litigation – Mayer Brown received a “Highly Commended” ranking for its successful pro bono representation of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), the only pro bono litigation matter recognized by the Financial Times. The case “will extend the boundaries of the Freedom of Information Act,” the report said. New York Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Anthony Diana led the Mayer Brown team.
The report, which was conducted in conjunction with RSG Consulting, assessed matters on their originality, the legal strategy employed and the impact of the work on clients.
