Myanmar has emerged as one of the most promising markets in Southeast Asia. In 2011 the Myanmar government began introducing economic and political reforms that have significantly improved the regulatory framework for foreign direct investment.
Following the lifting of longstanding sanctions on Myanmar, Mayer Brown was one of the first international firms to work on a successful project there, advising Toyo Thai on the Ahlone 121 MW combined- cycle IPP, the first independent power project to be constructed in Myanmar.
Since then, our work has increased in volume and profile, including many first-of-their-kind transactions in the country, such as advising the lenders on the Myingyan 225 MW gas-fired power project, which is Myanmar’s first internationally competitively tendered power project; the country’s first multi-bank project financing; and the most anticipated infrastructure project in Myanmar to date.
