US-Brazil Relations: What to Expect in 2011?

The United States and Brazil enjoy a friendly but complex relationship. On one hand, Brazil’s burgeoning economy presents numerous opportunities for US businesses and investors. Brazil’s GDP expanded at an unprecedented rate of 7 percent in 2010, and market analysts predict Brazil will continue to experience strong economic growth in 2011. On the other hand, the country’s diplomatic agenda under outgoing President Lula has, at times, been a source of controversy, with trade disputes often taking center stage in the two countries’ bilateral agenda. But what can be expected in 2011 as Brazil’s first female president, Dilma Rousseff, takes office?

Will Rousseff continue Lula’s trade and foreign investment policies? How will the Rousseff administration handle trade disputes with the United States? What is the outlook for US investors in Brazil? These and other related questions will be the theme of a breakfast seminar with Brazil’s Foreign Trade Secretary, Welber Barral, former US Trade Representative and Mayer Brown Strategic Advisor, Ambassador Susan Schwab, Bruno Werneck, partner at Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown LLP in São Paulo and Managing Director of McLarty Associates, Kellie Meiman Hock.
