Patent Basics 2009

This program will address patent issues that may arise in the context of general law practice and business management.The primary areas of patent law will be discussed, including what is considered patentable, how to prosecute and protect patents, and how to license patents, in addition to an in-depth analysis of patent litigation issues.

Mayer Brown Partner, Ian N. Feinberg will Chair the event and present the 4:00 p.m. session, "Patent Litigation and Anatomy of a Patent Infringement Case." Other topics to be covered include:

  • Parts of a patent application and what makes something patentable
  • The cycle of a patent, from application-preparation through filing, prosecution, and issuance
  • Issues unique to patent infringement and litigation, including claim construction, defenses, and
  • Relevant timelines
  • Issues that may arise in mergers and acquisitions transactions
  • Patent licensing scenarios
