Hong Kong Prepares for the Minimum Wage Ordinance

In a historic moment for Hong Kong, and after years of debate, the Legislative Council voted to pass the Minimum Wage Ordinance ("MWO") in Hong Kong in July 2010. The introduction of statutory minimum wage is a significant milestone in protecting the most vulnerable workers in Hong Kong. Accordingly, many employers will be preparing themselves for changes on business operations and administrative processes, to avoid a breach of section 23 of the Employment Ordinance (Payment of Wages).

Our experienced employment practitioners Duncan Abate and Hong Tran will share with us the key elements to be considered in complying with the minimum wage obligations in Hong Kong.

This seminar will focus on:

  • The requirements under the MWO – some parts of the MWO are not as straightforward as they might seem
  • The areas where employers should note
  • What employers can do to ensure compliance with the MWO
