Mayer Brown litigators in Washington DC won an important pro bono victory on behalf of the DC Council in its historic suit against the District’s Mayor and Chief Financial Officer to gain budget autonomy. In 2013, the Council enacted an amendment to the District’s Charter that changed the process for appropriating DC’s locally raised revenues. Certain local officials believed that the law was invalid and refused to enforce it. After a multi-year legal battle, the DC Superior Court recently upheld the Charter amendment on the merits, clearing the way for the Council to pass its own budget, instead of waiting for Congress. The team was led by Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Brian Netter and included associates Tom Wolf and Matt Waring.
