Mayer Brown secured a grant of political asylum for pro bono client Mr. N. and his family. Mr. N was a member of a political group opposed to the ruling regime in his home country of Gabon. He had been twice arrested, detained and tortured by police and fled to the United States with his family.
At Mr. N’s asylum hearing, immigration judge Elizabeth Kessler commended Mayer Brown for the quality of its legal brief and granted Mr. N political asylum; the US Department of Homeland Security waived its right to an appeal. The Mayer Brown team included Washington DC Litigation & Dispute Resolution associates Stephen Medlock and Christopher Ford. The matter was referred to the firm by Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services.
