A recent survey found that 70 percent of Europeans have concerns about their online data and how well it is secured, particularly in light of the reach afforded to the US government by the USA Patriot Act. Indeed, some EU data centers have gone so far as to advertise that they provide “a safe haven from the reaches of the Patriot Act.” But are these concerns realistic? In this article, we seek to dispel some of the myths shrouding the Patriot Act, and to provide an assessment of the risks the Patriot Act poses to data stored in the cloud.
