As part of its partnership with the Gage-Eckington Elementary School, the Washington office of Mayer Brown participated in the third annual District of Columbia Public Schools Beautification Day on August 25.  The annual DCPS Beautification Day was established in 2005 as the official day for a citywide "spruce up" of all DC public schools and front grounds in preparation for school opening.  Despite temperatures that reached 100 degrees, Mayer Brown and other community volunteers weeded, raked, trimmed bushes and trees, planted flowers, removed trash, and painted, helping the school undergo a major transformation in just one day. 

The firm developed its relationship with the Gage-Eckington School in 2003, through the Public Education Project of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights & Urban Affairs.  Today, the Washington office participates in a mentoring program, reading days, school field trips, the science fair, and the end-of-year Celebration Day.  In April 2007, one of the Gage-Eckington teams coached by Mayer Brown came in first in the GeoPlunge Tournament, a city-wide geography contest.
