On 21 November 2019, our Employment Senior Associate Joe Choy delivered a seminar titled “Hong Kong Employment Law 101” to HNA Group at its Hong Kong office. It was attended by 12 staff members from the Human Resources Department and Risk Control and Legal Department of HNA Group (including its General Counsel and HR Director).
Joe kicked off the seminar by introducing Mayer Brown’s employment team. He then moved on to give an overview of the Employment Ordinance (“EO”) and explain the key obligations under the EO (including wages, different types of leave and leave payment, entitlements on termination etc.). The attendees were particularly interested in the various statutory restrictions on terminating employee and the ways to manage these risks. Joe then discussed the four anti-discrimination ordinances in Hong Kong and the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, which (in addition to the EO) are important pieces of legislation employers have to navigate in the course of the employment relationship. The seminar was enthusiastically received with active participation from the floor.
