Mayer Brown successfully co-hosted a lunch seminar titled “Employment Permission for Successful Unified Screening Mechanism (USM) Claimants” in Hong Kong recently. Our lawyers Nishrin Hussain, Jennifer Lau, Wei Na Sim and Hong Tran were joined by Julia Mayerhofer of PILnet Hong Kong and Jonnet Bernal of Christian Action’s Centre for Refugees to discuss the practical issues refugees face to get employment permission in Hong Kong.
Julia kicked off the event with welcoming remarks. Jonnet followed to introduce Christian Action’s Centre for Refugees and talked about the development of the first successful USM claimant to work in Hong Kong in 2013. The Mayer Brown team then led into the main discussion, in which they shared the legal test from GA v. Director of Immigration, followed by the application of the test for a successful USM claimant’s application for permission to work, and the practical steps and the information required for preparing the application for permission to work. They also highlighted the very different challenges they had in handling and managing their pro bono cases. The seminar, which concluded with a lively Q&A session hosted by Hong, was well attended by over 40 delegates from NGOs, law firms and banks.
