Gabriela Kennedy moderated a panel session on day one of the International Trademark Association (INTA) Anti-counterfeiting Conference: Staying Ahead of the Curve (the “Conference”), held at the Kowloon Shangri-La from 6 to 7 February 2017. The two-day Conference provided a forum for brand owners, government officials, and legal professionals to discuss best practices for developing a brand protection programme in an environment of changing technologies and emerging sophisticated counterfeiting networks.

In her session, “It’s My Name!” Gabriela, together with her panel of speakers, David Chen of Shanghai Greroyalt Law Firm and Zachary N. Toczynski of Levi Strauss & Co., examined the challenges faced by companies that have to deal with fraudulent trade name registrations and examined ways in which they can effectively tackle these fraudulent registrations, counterfeit stores, and the audacious activities of counterfeiters that take advantage of legal loopholes. They also discussed strategies adopted by experts to leverage unfair competition and unfair trade practices laws to combat the ongoing challenges of counterfeits.
