On December 2, 2016, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) announced that it will begin considering applications for a special-purpose national bank charter from fintech companies. The OCC’s announcement was accompanied by the release of “Exploring Special Purpose National Bank Charters for Fintech Companies,” a white paper providing additional details regarding this fintech bank charter. This announcement was the culmination of a lengthy period of consideration by the OCC and discussions with various stakeholders.
