Mayer Brown announced that Cybersecurity & Data Privacy partner Marcus Christian and Antitrust & Competition partner Oral Pottinger (both Washington DC) were named 2020 “Black Leaders Worth Watching” honorees by Profiles in Diversity Journal. The inaugural award recognizes individuals for their dedication to excellence and commitment to their communities, and for their willingness to mentor and support the next generation of Black leaders.

Mr. Christian represents clients in matters involving cybersecurity governance, cybersecurity planning, cyber fraud, incident preparation and response, and internal investigations, among others. Before joining the firm, he served as the executive assistant US attorney at the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.

In his profile, Mr. Christian outlined his roadmap to success and emphasized the significance of formal education. “When I face a new opportunity or challenge, I think of how my formal education began...My education began with the understanding (not necessarily mine) that the pursuit of what I could be required me to leave my comfort zone,” he said. “It began with the realization that I had a lot more to learn than to teach. It began with the support of a community of people who were committed to my growth and success.” (View profile.)

Mr. Pottinger focuses his practice on mergers and acquisitions, civil and criminal antitrust investigations, antitrust counseling, antitrust litigation, advertising and consumer protection matters. In addition, as a member of the firm’s Electronic Discovery & Information Governance practice, Mr. Pottinger serves as a trusted advisor to corporate clients by identifying and implementing effective e-discovery solutions addressing many complex legal matters, including government investigations, class action discovery, information risk management, defensible disposition, and e-discovery best practices.

In his profile, Mr. Pottinger highlighted the importance of mentorship and education for future generations to succeed in the legal and business world. “Showing the next generation that education can be a path forward to elevate yourself is so vitally important to mentoring the next generation,” he told the publication.
