Mayer Brown was named Higher Achievement’s 2019 “Going Places” honoree for the firm’s decade-long support of and partnership with Higher Achievement DC Metro.
Since 2009, Mayer Brown has actively engaged with Higher Achievement scholars and alumni, including hosting the firm’s mock trial and career day for Higher Achievement scholars, as part of the firm’s “Making the Case for Kids” campaign. Launched in 2014, the campaign is a multidimensional community service and pro bono initiative aimed at supporting children and education.
The firm’s deep commitment to Higher Achievement began with partner Dan Masur’s personal interest, which developed into an office-wide partnership.
“Higher Achievement won me over the first time I attended the Love Out Loud poetry event,” said Mr. Masur. “I was just amazed by the kids, their poise, their poetry, and the messages they were able to convey. I decided on the spot that I and my office had to get involved.”
Higher Achievement is a national organization that provides youth from at-risk communities the best opportunities to succeed in school and life. From fifth through eighth grade, Higher Achievement scholars spend 650 hours a year learning an advanced curriculum that is aligned with state standards. In addition to extensive academic support, Higher Achievement scholars are coached and mentored in areas of social skills and leadership.
