Mayer Brown announced that Chicago-based ERISA Litigation partner Nancy Ross has been named to The National Law Journal’s (NLJ) list of “Employment Law Trailblazers.” This inaugural list recognizes “agents of change” – legal professionals who have impacted employment law and the overall legal industry through new types of strategies and innovative court cases. A co-leader of the firm’s ERISA Litigation practice, Ms. Ross was selected by NLJ for her impressive work representing clients in employee benefits disputes. NLJ highlighted several of Ms. Ross’ important ERISA cases, including one quashing an attempt at state regulation of benefits plans. Successfully arguing before the Second Circuit that ERISA preempted a Vermont law requiring her client to disclose confidential employee information, and paving the way for confirmation by the US Supreme Court, Ms. Ross prompted “one of the leading cases in ERISA preemption and caused many other states to forgo similar statutes, helping promote ERISA uniformity nationwide.” The publication also recognized her work with the nation’s unions to achieve “win-win situations where employers can continue to provide retiree health benefits but also sustain jobs.”
