Mayer Brown announced today that Michael McElroy has joined the firm as a partner resident in its Washington DC office. Mr. McElroy will focus his practice on a range of matters related to the mortgage banking and consumer finance industries. He joins from First Guaranty Mortgage Corporation, a mortgage lender headquartered in McLean, Virginia, where he served as general counsel and secretary. Previously, he served as general counsel, chief compliance officer and secretary for Stonegate Mortgage Corporation, an NYSE-listed mortgage lender and servicer.

“Mike’s broad experience serving in a variety of senior positions at leading mortgage companies and in the private sector is impressive,” said Paul Jorissen, a co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Banking & Finance practice. “He offers our firm and clients a very powerful combination of skills. Mayer Brown is uniquely positioned as the only firm that has both significant structured finance transactional and consumer regulatory capabilities, which are in high demand by our clients.”

Mr. McElroy is a highly accomplished lawyer with more than 20 years of leadership experience in the financial services industry. He has held senior roles with national mortgage firms, government-sponsored enterprises and private law firms. Mr. McElroy has represented clients in a broad range of matters, including structured finance transactions, IPOs, corporate governance and board advisory matters, regulatory actions, mergers & acquisitions, private equity investments, technology and other outsourcing transactions, and warehouse and mortgage servicing financings.

“Mayer Brown has the best-in-class platform for financial services and Fintech across all disciplines, which made my move an easy choice,” said Mr. McElroy. “Working closely with my new consumer regulatory, structured finance and corporate colleagues, I look forward to using my experience as general counsel to help the firm remain a one-stop shop for clients.”

According to Daniel Masur, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown’s DC office, “Mike’s addition builds on our terrific regulatory team in the Washington DC office. His practice will broadly diversify our preeminent global Banking & Finance practice and enhance our ability to guide mortgage companies in each stage of development, including warehouse borrowing to securitizations, corporate debt, private equity and strategic transactions.”

Building on the momentum of consistent growth in Mayer Brown’s finance capabilities, Mr. McElroy is the 15th partner addition to the firm’s global Banking & Finance practice in the past year. Mr. McElroy’s arrival also marks the strategic expansion of Mayer Brown’s Structured Finance group, which now consists of more than 100 lawyers across 10 offices. Recently, the firm welcomed noted structured finance partners Ryan Suda and James Antonopoulos in New York and Chicago, respectively.
